The first step to making is a willingness to learn.

When learning a new skill, knowledge of the tools comes first.

In the process of mastering techniques, for making gift items like those shown below, three tools are fundamental:

1. SNIPS

cuts jewellery wire and pins

2. ROUND NOSED PLIERS

turns wire to form loops and rings

3. FLAT NOSED PLIERS

grips components and opens or closes jump rings

The 4th tool shown is an option/matter of personal preference

4. FLAT NOSED, CURVED END PLIERS

useful for difficult to reach areas

In the early learning stages it is not vital; some craft practitioners prefer this tool rather than standard, round nosed, pliers

See examples of making, using basic tools and adopting simple processes below:

The process for making these earrings is the same as it is for making charms or pendants, except instead of adding fish hooks to the top a jump ring or bail is added for a necklace or a split ring/strap for key rings/gift charms
